Sentronic Know How  
The function of the capacitive proximity switch is based on the change of the electric field in the environment in front of its sensor electrode (active zone). The capacitance between the active electrode and the electrical ground potential is measured. By the approach of a metallic or non-metallic material to the active zone of the sensor, the capacitance increases and thus influences the oscillation amplitude of the RC oscillator. This change causes a downstream trigger stage to "tilt" and change its initial state. The switching distance of a capacitive sensor can vary very much and depends on the permittivity constant (see permittivity), the sensor diameter, the material and the mass of the approximated body and furthermore on the installation position of the sensor.
