What is a limit switch? |

| A position switch—also known as a limit switch or end switch—is an electromechanical switch that responds to the mechanical movement or position of an object. As soon as a moving part, such as a workpiece, lever, or machine component, reaches a predefined position, it mechanically activates the switch. This opens or closes an electrical contact, which triggers a control signal or shuts down a machine. Position switches are used in industry for position monitoring, control, and safety of machines and systems. They are a central element in automation technology and are used wherever precise movements need to be detected and controlled. Thanks to their robust design, position switches are extremely reliable and durable. They operate independently of electromagnetic interference fields and offer a high degree of safety due to their galvanic isolation. Many models also have high protection classes (e.g., IP67) and can be used in harsh industrial environments. Typical applications can be found in: > Conveyor and packaging systems > Mechanical engineering and robotics > Lifting and gantry systems > Safety interlocks and end position controls Depending on the type of application, there are different designs and actuation types – such as lever, plunger, or spring bar switches.
